Questions about Power BI with CPM

From what Power BI actually is to how a project with CPM works in practice.

What is Power BI and do we actually need it?+
Power BI is Microsoft’s business intelligence platform — it connects to your existing data sources, builds a live data model, and delivers interactive dashboards that update automatically. If your team currently spends time manually pulling reports from spreadsheets or different systems, or if key decisions get made without a clear picture of what the data actually says, Power BI solves that problem directly.
We already use Excel for reporting. Why switch?+
Excel is great for analysis. It is not great as a reporting infrastructure. Every manual update is a risk — wrong data, outdated numbers, version conflicts. Power BI connects directly to your source systems, so reports update themselves. Your team stops building the same report every week and starts spending that time acting on the data instead.
What data sources can Power BI connect to?+
Power BI connects to over 100 data sources natively, including Excel, SQL databases, Salesforce, SAP, SharePoint, Azure, Google Analytics, and most ERP and CRM systems. In practice, most organisations have 2–5 core sources that matter. Part of CPM’s analysis phase is identifying exactly which connections are needed and the cleanest way to build them.
How long does the project take?+
On average, CPM clients reach their first productive dashboard in 3 days. A full project — including data model, multiple dashboards, integrations and training — typically runs between two and six weeks, depending on scope and data complexity. CPM has completed over 470 Power BI implementations, so timelines are realistic and delivery is structured.
Do we need technical staff in-house to maintain it?+
No. Part of the CPM handover is making sure your team can use, update and extend the solution independently. We build for maintainability, not dependency. That said, if you want CPM to continue managing the environment after delivery, ongoing support arrangements are also available.
What does CPM handle and what do we do?+
CPM handles the full technical build: data model, connections, DAX measures, dashboard design and testing. What we need from you is access to your data sources, clarity on what decisions each dashboard should support, and a point of contact who can review and give feedback during the build. We keep the process lean — most of the work happens on our side, not yours.
What happens after the project is delivered?+
You receive full ownership of everything CPM builds — the data model, the reports and all underlying logic. The handover includes documentation and a training session for your team. If your needs grow or your data landscape changes, CPM is available for follow-up projects. Many clients start with a focused scope and expand once they see what Power BI makes possible.
